A Look At The Pacific NW Metro Job Markets

Staffing Industry Analysis recently published a “ranking” of 354 metro markets and our friends at Pace Staffing in Seattle provided this overview. The ranking is based on a number of factors including market size, number of jobs lost, last six months job growth/retraction rate (slope of change). Basically, the higher the ranking, the “worse” the growth, or lack of, over the last six months.

All markets were ranked independent of their size….so some of our smaller markets were more significantly impacted by a more pronounced “slope” of change.

Very few metro markets showed any job growth (we counted 9 out of the 354, with most of these markets growing 1% or less) so most of the rankings come from a “least retraction” framework. Not as a surprise, most of the metro markets in the Pacific Northwest have gone through steep declines. 7 Pacific Northwest job markets ranked above the national median, 12 ranked below.

#4 – Kennewick/Pasco/Richland…jobs are growing at a current rate of 2.8%, noticeably improving over the last six months (8,000 job market)

#32 – Bend, Oregon….jobs declining at a rate of 2.3% (68,000 job market)

#86 – Pocatello, Idaho….jobs declining at a rate of 2.9% (36,000 job market)

#123 – Olympia, Washington….jobs declining at a rate of 1.8% (101,000 job market)

#151 – Tacoma – jobs declining at a rate of 2.7% (273,000 job market)

#162 – Idaho Falls, Idaho….jobs declined 2.9% (50,000 job market)

#175 – Medford, Oregon….jobs declined 4.2% (77,000 job market)

#212 – Yakima, WA….jobs declined at a rate of 3.9%, (76,000 job market)

#236 – Eugene, Oregon….jobs declined 5% (145,000 job market)

#237 – Bellingham, WA…jobs declined 3.9% (81,000 job market)

#271 – Coeur d’Alene, ID…jobs declined 4.4% and continue to deteriorate (56,000 job market)

#285 – Spokane, WA…jobs declined 4.1%, and are continuing to deteriorate (208,000 market)

#299 – Bremerton, WA…jobs declining 5.9%, currently stabilizing (82,000 job market)

#306 – Lewiston, ID…jobs declining 4.8%, with continued deterioration (28,000 job market)

#330 – Seattle/Tacoma/Bellevue…jobs declined 3.9%, currently stabilizing (1,702,000 job market)

#331 – Salem, OR…jobs have retracted 6.6% with current deterioration (144,000 job market)

#334 – Boise/Nampa, Id….jobs have retracted 7.4%, currently stabilizing (253,000 job market)

#335 – Seattle/Bellevue/Everett….jobs have retracted 4.1%, currently stabilizing (1,428,000 job market)

#350 – Portland, Oregon….jobs have retracted 5.8% with ongoing deterioration (976,000 job market)

The highest ranked growth markets were:
#1 – Harrisonburg, Virginia
#2 – McAllen/Edinburg, Texas
#3 – Jackson, Mississippi

The lowest ranked markets include:
#354 – Detroit, MI … 7.5% decline
#353 – Warren/Troy/Farmington, MI….8.2% decline
#352 – Phoenix, AZ…7.8% decline. stabilized
#351 – Las Vegas, NV…6.6% decline, still deteriorating
